The role of a postpartum doula is to "mother the mother", and to help the family experience success. Families hire me essentially to make their lives a little easier once the baby arrives. Depending on the needs of the family, this can range from emotional support during the intense psychological transition of becoming a parent to practical help with running the household. It is hard to predict exactly what will be needed, but I will come with suggestions each day for ways I can help lighten your load.
Mother Care/Emotional Support
Having a new baby instantly changes your reality from being "self" focused to being that of a caregiver. This change comes easily to some, but for many it can be surprisingly difficult. For most people, it can take time to become comfortable as a parent. In this age of information, the pressure to do everything perfectly can be overwhelming. Many first time parents naturally feel concerned about their baby's well-being. My goal is to help parents become more confident in their new roles and to help reduce anxiety through reassurance, support and information. While much of the focus shifts to the new baby, I can help provide assurance that mom also gets the rest and nourishment she needs to feel calm and supported.
Additionally, I am trained in recognizing the signs of postpartum mood disorders. If you feel that you may be becoming depressed, or if you are questioning the thoughts and feelings you may be having, we can discuss this at any time. There is a new spectrum of "normal" in the postpartum period, and I can help you determine when help may be needed.
Newborn Care
Many times, new parents have had minimal experience caring for a newborn (or none at all!). I can help with comprehensive newborn care from diapering, feeding, soothing, and bathing your baby, to baby-wearing, infant massage, and more! I can assist you with recognizing developmental milestones so you feel more in tune with your child, and more confident in your own instincts.

What I Do Not Do
Drive members of your family (although I will happily ride along in your car to doctor visits, grocery shopping, or other outings), take temperatures, check stitches, or give medical advice, heavy housework (mopping, cleaning bathrooms, windows, etc.)
Scheduling
It can be helpful to schedule a doula to be there on the day the baby (or babies) arrive at home. A calm, welcoming environment, and the presence of a support person can set the tone for this special time.
I offer my services in blocks of time ranging from 4-7 hours. (I have a 4-hour minimum per shift, and an 8-hour minimum per contract.) I serve a 35 mile radius, but can make exceptions depending on need and availability. Please call for a free prenatal consultation.
I schedule clients on a first come, first served basis. If you have already delivered, and you are needing support, it's not too late. Please contact me.
Payment
I accept gift certificates. This is a great gift option for family members or friends who live out of town. Please note: it is important that the expectant couple initiate contact with me first.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont will reimburse for up to 9 hours of services through the Better Beginnings Program. In this case, services will be provided in three, 3-hour blocks. If you have a different insurance provider, please ask me for details on how to request reimbursement.
If you have questions about postpartum doulas or would like to know more about how I can help you, please contact me.
